Question: I have a (finite) set of integers. After adding another integer, the mean increased. But, the median did not.

Find the number-letter key (i.e. translate the letters into numbers)

Approximate the square root of 13 to three decimal places (without a calculator!).
Finding a number's square root by hand:
Step 1: Choose a close perfect square. Identify its square root.
Step 2: Divide number by the close root .
Step 3: Average the step 2 result and the close root.
Step 4: Check your answer.
If not close enough, repeat: divide, average, check...
(See square root 13 example in the right column)
